The weather is very hot in this part of the world although it is raining on some days. Summers have started in many parts of the world. During summers it is a must to keep our body hydrated and eat naturally cooling foods. Today I am sharing the recipe for Sattu Ka Ghol / Sharbat ,a popular protein drink which is naturally cooling . It is a no cook recipe . You just need a few ingredients and then you can enjoy this incredibly delicious drink.
What is Sattu?
Sattu is a protein-rich flour made from powdered chana (Bengal gram) or other pulses and cereals. It is quite popular in many parts of India such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Uttarakhand and UP. I have used Chana sattu here. Sattu is also made of barley or Jowar (Sorghum). I was introduced to Sattu when we moved to Bhilai .It was a regular affair at their place as they were from Bihar.

Main Ingredients of Sattu ka Ghol / Sharbat:
- Sattu : Chana Sattu is made from roasted black Chickpeas. I have used store bought sattu flour. You can make it at home, but it is a little time consuming process. Sattu is also known as Poor man’s Protein.
- Chaat Masala: Adding chaat masala is completely optional. I love the flavor and taste when added.
- Chilled Water: Add chilled water to enjoy the drink and keep yourself hydrated ti beat the heat.
- Pepper Powder: Fresh Black pepper powder adds some spice kick .
- Roasted Cumin Powder: Adds a nice flavor to the drink
- Lemon Juice: Adds some sourness to drink.
- Kala Namak : Pinch of Kala namak for the taste
- Fresh Mint Leaves: Makes the drink so refreshing.
- Fresh Coriander : I love the adding fresh herbs to the drink.
SATTU KA GHOL / SHARBAT
Equipment
- 1 Jar
- 1 Spoon / Hand Whisk
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp Sattu Flour
- 1/2 Tsp Chaat Masala
- 2 Cups Chilled Water or as Required
- 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper Powder
- 1 Pinch Kala Namak
- 1/4 Tsp Roasted Cumin Powder
- 5 Nos Fresh Mint Leaves
- 1/2 Tbsp Fresh Coriander leaves
- 1 Tsp Lemon Juice
Instructions
- Add sattu flour , Chaat Masala , Roasted Cumin Powder, kala namak ,black pepper powder to a jar. Mix well.
- Add 1/2 cup of water and mix all the ingredients to get a lump free mixture.
- Add roughly chopped mint leaves and coriander leaves and lemon juice .
- Add chilled water and stir using a hand whisk or a spoon to get a nice lump free mixture.
- Pour into the serving glass and serve Chilled Sattu ka Ghol / Sharbat.

Notes
- Adjust the consistency as per your preference.
- You can substitute green chilli with Pepper powder
- Chaat masala is optional but i would suggest do not skip it.
- Adding fresh coriander and mint leaves makes it very refreshing .
- You can have it on busy days . A good protein drink that will keep your body cool and full too.
- Having sattu moderately in your diet is good .

Sattu Ka Ghol is an absolute delight on a dull Summer afternoon. Loved your presentation and photographs. I also add finely chopped raw onion along with coriander to sattu ka ghol.

Preethi I got introduced to this delicious and healthy drink when my daughter got married. Her MIL had come to stay with us for a few days and she made sattu ka ghol and we loved it. Perfect cooling drink for the hot season.
