We are looking for new breakfast ideas everyday to treat our family. Today I am sharing a very easy and delicious Masala Bread Upma that my family loves. Even a fussy eater will not be able to resist this delicious Masala Bread Upma. Serve it for breakfast or snack time. Very quick to whip up too.
Why is Breakfast Important ?
It is a very important meal of the day. As the name suggests we break our overnight fast. Breakfast should never be skipped as our sugar levels are usually low in the morning.It replenishes our supply of glucose to boost our energy levels and alertness . It even provides other essential nutrients required for good health.Hence always have your breakfast.
Main Ingredients for Masala Bread Upma :
Bread : You can use white or wholemeal bread here. I have used soft wholemeal bread here.
Onion: Onions are crisp and enhance the taste of the upma when mixed with spices.
Green Chilli: Increase or decrease the number of chillies to adjust your spice tolerance. I have mildly spiced chilli here.
Fresh Coriander: I love to add fresh coriander to this dish. Makes the dish so flavorful.
Green Peas: You can defrost the frozen peas and use it in case you don’t have access to fresh green peas.
Vangibath Masala: This is one of my secret ingredient in this dish. Do not skip it.
Rasam Powder: This is the second secret ingredient that is used here. I have used home made rasam powder.
Salt : I have used Himalayan pink salt.You may use regular salt here.
Spiced Peanuts / Congress: This is a spicy peanut very popular in Karnataka. In case you do not have access to it,add roasted peanuts.
Tamrind Paste:Helps to balance the spices and a adds a little tang to the masala upma.
For Tadka: For Tadka i have used Urad dal , channa dal, mustard seeds , asafoetida , turmeric and curry leaves.
Recipe for Masala Bread Upma :

Ingredients for Masala Bread Upma:
10 Bread torn into small pieces
2 Onions Finely Chopped
1 Green Chilli Finely Chopped
1/2 Cup Green Peas
1 Tbsp Fresh Coriander
Salt to Taste
1 Tsp Vangibath Masala
1.5 Tsp Rasam Powder
1 Tbsp Spiced Peanuts / Congress
1/2 Tsp Tamrind Paste
For Tadka:
1.5 Tsp Urad Dal
1 Tsp Channa Dal
3/4 Tsp Mustard Seeds
1/4 Tsp Asafoetida
1/2 Tsp Turmeric
Few Curry Leaves
1 Tbsp Oil
Method:
Heat oil in a wide bottom pan.Add urad dal and channa dal .
Once it turns slightly golden brown add mustard seeds , chopped green chillies , turmeric , asafoetida and curry leaves.
A the mustard splutters add chopped onions and roast till golden brown.
Now add green peas, Tamrind paste ,vangibath powder and rasam powder and mix well. Let it cook for about 5 minutes on low flame.
Now add bread pieces and give a good mix . All the bread pieces will be nicely coated.
Add salt as required. Mix well and let it get roasted for about 5 minutes on medium flame. Keep mixing and ensure it does not burn.
Turn off the heat.
Garnish with finely chopped fresh coriander and congress.
Serve hot with coffee or tea.

Notes:
I have used home made spice powders here. You can use store brought masala powder (MTR Brand) to get a similar taste.
You can use any bread of your choice.
In case you can’t get Congress add roasted peanuts.
