TOMATO NILAVA PACHADI / PICKLE

Today I am sharing a delicious Tomato Nilava Pachadi or pickle recipe. I had the chance to first taste it during my stay at Visakhapatnam many years back. Since then I have become a great fan of this Pachadi.It can be made in large quantities and stored in air tight containers. I prefer to make small batches and enjoy it fresh. Serve it along with Dosa ,Idli, use as sandwich spread or even mix it with hot rice and ghee. I bet you will enjoy every bite .

What is Pachadi?

Pachadi is basically a traditional south Indian fresh pickle served as a side dish.It is made with fresh vegetables , yogurt, coconut, ginger and curry leaves.It is generally hot or mildly spiced.This Andhra style Tomato Nilava Pachadi is most popular in Telugu speaking homes. It is mostly spicy and made in big batches for daily use. There are many Variations to this traditional pickle. It is so easy to make. It can be stored for 2-3 months .It is tangy ,hot and sour with flavors of garlic and fenugreek seeds.

Ingredients for Tomato Nilava Pachadi / Pickle:

  • Firm Red Tomatoes
  • Tamrind
  • Salt
  • Red Chilli Powder
  • Oil
  • Mustard seeds
  • Fenugreek powder
  • Split Urad Dal
  • Cumin Seeds
  • Garlic Cloves
  • Dry Red Chilli
  • Asafoetida

Recipe for Tomato Nilava Pachadi / Pickle:

Ingredients for Tomato Nilava Pachadi / Pickle:

  • 500 Gms Firm Red Tomatoes
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • 50 Gms Tamrind (Adjust as per the tanginess of the tomatoes)

For Tempering:

  • 1 Tsp Mustard seeds
  • 4 Dry Red Chillies
  • 1 Tsp Split Urad dal
  • 6 Tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 Tsp Jeera /Cumin
  • 6 Tbsp Oil
  • 1/4 Tsp Asafoetida / Hing
  • 1 Tsp Fenugreek Seeds

Method:

  • Ensure all the ingredients are dry and moisture free.
  • Roast Fenugreek and pound it coarsely in a mortar Pestle.Keep it aside.
  • Chop the tomatoes finely.
  • Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wide bottom pan. Add the chopped tomatoes and tamrind. Let in cook on medium flame untill it turns mushy.
  • The Pulp Will start to Thicken. Turn off the heat.
  • Once the mixture is cool blend it to fine mixture.
  • Heat another pan with remaining oil.
  • Once the oil is hot add split urad dal , jeera , mustard , dry red chilli and garlic.
  • As the mustard splutters add the tomato tamrind mixture and chilli powder.
  • After 5 minutes add asafoetida and coarsely pound roasted fenugreek seeds.
  • Keep stirring and cook until the oil starts to leave the sides.
  • Once done turn off the heat.
  • Allow it to cool completely.
  • Transfer to a sterilized air tight container .
  • Mix with rice or serve with dosa ,idli ,pesarattu , paniyaram or use as a sandwich spread and enjoy……………………………
