A hearty welcome to my blog in 2021. My first post to start the new year.Delicious spicy masala pav(Street Food) is a very popular Street food from Mumbai. One of most popular and favourite street food every mumbaikar can vouch for. This is totally different from Pav Bhaji and can be a complete meal in itself. I have added a secret ingredients that blends so well and you can’t guess it. The taste is unbeatable.
What is theme for Shhhhh Cooking Secretly Challenge ?
Our hostess for the theme #HotPot is Priya Iyer who blogs at thephotowali.wordpress.com. For this theme she wanted us to share any meal that we like to serve hot to our family on a cold winter day. She share this recipe for the theme. My partner is Shobha ji who is a wonderful and experienced blogger who gave me two secret ingredients Raw banana and Salt and I gave her Curry leaves and Toor dal and she whipped up a delicious Dakshin hotpot rasam for this theme. I whipped up Spicy masala pav(street food) for the theme.
Ingredients:
Raw Banana :Adds a nice taste to the masala pav
Bell Pepper: I have added green bell pepper.
Fresh Pav: Always use fresh pav . Good if you can bake it at home.
Onion: An important ingredient of this dish.
Tomato:Used Red Color Ripe but firm tomatoes. Gives a nice red color to the dish.
Salt-Main ingredient of the dish
Ginger garlic paste–You can either use ginger garlic paste or finely chopped ginger garlic.
Pav Bhaji Masala: Main masala powder for this dish
Tikka Masala— Completely Optional
Kashmiri red Chilli Powder–Adds a nice red color to the dish
Fresh Coriander–Adds a nice aroma to the dish. I love to garnish with fresh coriander.
Butter–Be generous in using butter.
Lemon Juice –To be added before serving
Cumin: Add Cumin for the tadka
Recipe for Spicy Masala Pav(Street Food):

Ingredients for Spicy Masala Pav(Street Food):
2 Large Onions Finely Chopped
1 Green Bell Pepper
6 Fresh Pav
1 Raw banana / Unripe Plantain peeled ,boiled and mashed
3 Ripe red Tomatoes
1 Tsp Cumin
Salt to taste
1 Tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
2.5 Tsp Pav Bhaji Masala
1 Tsp Kashmiri Chilli Powder
1/2 Tsp Tikka masala
1 Cup Finely Chopped Fresh Coriander
Juice of 1 Lemon
4 Tsp Butter
3/4 Cup Water or as required
Method:
Pressure Cook upto 3 whistles the Raw banana and nicely mash it and ensure no lumps. Add Tikka masala and let it rest.
Heat a large sized skillet / Tava.
Add 2 tbsp Butter. Add Cumin and let them splutter.
Next add the ginger garlic paste and saute until the raw smell is gone.
Now add finely chopped onions and saute until they turn translucent.
Next step is to add the finely chopped tomatoes and saute for 3-4 mins until they are nicely done.
Once the tomatoes are cooked add pav bhaji masala, and Kashmiri chilli powder. Saute for a few seconds.
Add finely chopped Bell pepper.Saute for 2-3 minutes.
Mix the mashed raw banana and tikka masala mixture . Add salt as per taste.
Add water and allow it to cook until all the water evaporates and mixture is slightly thickened.
Bring the cooked masala on one side of the skillet / Tava.
Add some butter and toast the pav. Turn the sides and toast both the sides with butter.
Now place the masala on the pav and spread it on the pav as well.
Repeat the process for all the remaining Pav.
Garnish the masala pav with some chopped onions ,coriander and bell pepper , Squeeze the lemon juice and serve Hot and Spicy Masala Pav with some extra butter if you want.

Notes:
You can use oil instead of butter but i would recommend to use butter.
Increase or decrease the pav bhaji masala as per your choice
Tikka masala is completely optional. I like to use it hence added.Feel free to skip if you do not have.
Always use fresh Pav as it tastes very delicious.

Ah, you made me remember some old days when we use to enjoy this so much. I sometimes make it for myself, when I want to indulge and have some bread at hand. Never added raw bananas though, will try it out next.

Using plantain for a spicy Masala Pav topping is a great idea. Like all the spice mixtures you’ve used.Such a wonderful meal option Preethi.
