SAVOURY DUMPLINGS / KHARA NUCHINUNDE

Today I am sharing a very delicious snack recipe . It can be prepared easily with easily available ingredients in your pantry. Savoury Dumplings / Khara Nuchinunde can be served with tea or coffee as a snack or even eaten for breakfast. You can make these dumplings / nuchinunde and freeze them in air tight containers. Stays good for a week in freezer. I would prefer to make them fresh though. A few days back I had shared the Nuchinunde soup recipe.

Ingredients for Savoury Dumplings / Khara Nuchinunde:

  • Masoor dal– This orange colored dal is nutritious and loaded with proteins.
  • Channa dal: An excellent source of protein for vegetarians.Rich in fiber andgood source of energy.
  • Fresh Ginger: Aids digestion and fights germs and soothes sore muscles too.
  • Coriander: Enhances the flavor and taste of the dish. Rich in immune boosting antioxidants.
  • Fresh Coconut: Rich in anti oxidants and is known to be good for the heart
  • Green Chilli: Adds a nice spice kick to the dish. Aids digestion and is rich in fiber.
  • Dil Leaves: Fresh dil leaves gives a nice aroma to the dish .Rich in antioxidants and a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, and vitamin A.
  • Salt: Main ingredient of the dish.
  • Jeera / Cumin Seeds: Rich in anti oxidants and good for health
  • Oil— A small quantity of odourless oil for the tadka.
  • Sesame seeds: Sesame seeds adds a nice crunch and taste to these dumplings. It is rich in fiber and calcium.
  • Asafoetida: Has Antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects. 
  • Turmeric: Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds with Powerful Medicinal Properties.
  • Red Chilli Powder: Adds some spice kick to the dish.
  • Mustard seeds: I love to add them for the seasoning
  • Curry Leaves: Adds a nice aroma and taste to the dish.

Recipe for Savoury Dumplings / Khara Nuchinunde:

Ingredients for Savoury Dumplings/ Khara Nuchinunde:

For Nuchinunde:

  • 1/2 Cup Masoor Dal
  • 1″ Fresh Ginger
  • 1/2 Cup Channa dal
  • 1 Tsp Jeera / Cumin
  • 1/4 Tsp Asafoetida
  • 2 Tbsp Dil Leaves
  • 1 Tbsp Fresh Coriander
  • Salt to Taste
  • Oil to grease your palm
  • 1 Cup Freshly grated Coconut
  • 2 Green chillies finely chopped
For Tadka / Seasoning:
  • 2 Tbsp White Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4 Tsp Turmeric
  • 1 Tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 3/4 Tsp Jeera / Cumin
  • 1 Tsp Urad dal
  • 3 Tsp Oil

Method:

  • Soak Masoor dal and channa dal for about 3 hours. Drain the water completely after 3 hours.
  • Grind the soaked dal and ginger to a coarse paste. Do not add water while grinding.
  • Add freshly grated coconut, finely chopped green chillies , jeera , asafoetida and salt.
  • Add dil leaves and finely chopped fresh coriander . Mix all the ingredients.
  • Grease your palm and take a small qty of mixture and make oval shaped dumplings. Repeat the process for the balance mixture.
  • I got about 21 dumplings. I used 8 dumplings for the soup and freezed the balance in an air tight container for next day .
  • Steam the required amount of dumplings for about 15 mins.
  • If you are steaming in a cooker then do not put the weight.
  • Keep them aside.

For the Tadka:

  • Heat a wide bottom pan.
  • Add oil.
  • Once the oil is hot reduce the heat and add sesame seeds , urad dal,mustard and jeera.
  • Saute for a few seconds and add curry leaves, turmeric and chilli powder.
  • Add the steamed dumplings and mix well. Turn off the heat.
  • Serve with Coffee or tea.
  • Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Preethi, this Khara Nuchinunde reminds me of the Gujarati muthiya expect of course the different dals used, the coconut and some of the spices. Such a healthy snack to enjoy.

  2. These nuchinunde look delicious. You have made them so healthy by using dalls rather than ready flours. They do remind me a bit of Gujarati rasiya muthias which can be used in a yogurty soup.

  3. You remind me of my aunt making these nuchin unde. Of course I did not much appreciate it then but I definitely want to try making them. The dals n coconut will get it yum flavors
