Angaya Podi is a traditionally home made digestive powder given to New Moms post delivery and even to people with Indigestion problems.It is believed to have medicinal properties and is sometimes consumed for its health benefits, particularly for its warming effect on the body. This recipe uses Toor dal . Some make it without the dal. It’s made from various Ayurvedic ingredients and is believed to aid digestion and alleviate stomach problems. This is a very popular recipe from Tamil Nadu. This recipe is passed on from generations and there are slight variations. Today I am sharing the one that I learnt from my Mom.
What is Angaya Podi (Traditional Digestive Powder?
Angaya Podi is a medicinal powder loaded with amazing health benefits. It is given to Lactating mother post delivery . Foods eaten by the new mom impacts the baby’s digestion .This powder eases digestion and helps the baby to have healthy milk.This recipe is handed over to us from generations. It is used to ease out digestion problems and also known to cure minor stomach problems. This podi /Powder is made using dry Neem Flowers , dried black night shade berries ,dried turkey berry and each of the ingredients has medicinal properties. Some of the other ingredients used are Coriander seeds ,dry ginger , dry red chilli,toor dal ,cumin seeds ,curry leaves and asafoetida .Considering the health Benefits of each ingredient in this powder, we must include it in our daily diet. There are slight variations to this recipe.
How to Use this Angaya Podi (Traditional Digestive Powder)?
Mix a teaspoon of Angaya Podi with Hot rice with ghee or gingelly oil . Eat immediately.You can also serve it with Tiffin Varieties like Dosa ,Uthappam etc. Always use a dry spoon for long shelf life. Store in an airtight container and it stays good for about 3 months. Store it in Refrigerator if there are weather extremities. I like it little coarse though.

ANGAYA PODI (TRADITIONAL DIGESTIVE POWDER)
Equipment
- 1 Heavy Bottom Pan
- 1 Blender
- 1 Spatula
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Dry Neem Flowers
- 1/4 Cup Black Nightshade Berry
- 1/4 Cup Dried Turkey Berry
- 2 Tbsp Coriander seeds
- 2 Tbsp Black Pepper Corns
- 25 Grams Dry Ginger Powder
- 1 Tsp Toor Dal
- 4 Sprigs Curry leaves
- 2 Tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1/2 Tsp Asafoetida
- 1 No Dry Red Chili
Instructions
- Heat a heavy bottom pan and dry roast dry neem flowers until golden brown. Keep it aside.
- In the same pan, dry roast dried turkey berries until golden brown. Keep it aside.
- Now add the dried turkey berries and dry roast until dark brown. Keep it aside.
- In the same hot pan dry roast rest of the ingredients until golden brown and turn off the heat.
- Allow it to cool completely . Blend it to a fine powder and store in an air tight container.
- Server with hot rice and ghee or gingelly oil.
- Enjoy !!!
Notes
- Using dry red chili is optional and you can skip it if you do not want to add.
- Some add carrom seeds as well.
- Always store it in an airtight container and use only dry spoon.
- You can use it in your regular diet .
- For new moms make a fine powder.
- I have made it coarse as I like to include in my regular diet.

A completely new recipe for me and would love to try this. We make a digestive powder but something completely different. Can I replace the berries with some other type of berries?

Angaya podi was what my mother-in-law made in a huge batch for us. I was new to it at that time, but now love it with rice and ghee.
