ALSANDE CURRY / LOBIA MASALA

Today, I am sharing a popular Alsande curry / Lobia Masala very popularly relished at my place. Alsande is referred to as Black eyed peas in English. As Alsande is highly nutritious it is very popularly consumed in Indian Cuisine. i just love them in my diet as it is an Ideal source of protein and fiber. Did you know that beans are a great source of protein for vegetarians? Yes…. You heard it right.

Equipment

  • 1 Pressure Cooker
  • 2 Wide Bottom Pan
  • 1 Blender
  • 1 Spatula

Ingredients
  

  • 1.5 Cup Alsande / Lobia / Black Eyed Peas
  • 4 Cups Water
  • 1/2 Tsp Turmeric / Haldi
  • Salt to taste

For Masala

  • 2 Tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 Tsp Coriander Seeds / Sabut Dhania
  • 1/4 Tsp Methi dana / Fenugreek seeds/ Menthya
  • 1 Cup Freshly grated Coconut
  • 5 Nos Dry Red Chilli
  • 1/2 Tsp Dry Mango Powder/ Amchur powder

For Tempering

  • 2 Tbsp Ghee
  • 10 Nos Curry Leaves
  • 1 Tsp Jeera / Cumin Seeds
  • 3/4 Tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup Finely Chopped Coriander
  • 1/4 Tsp Asafoetida

Instructions
 

To Cook the Black Eyed Peas / Alsande / Lobia

  • Soak Alsande in water for 4 hours or overnight .
  • Pressure Cook with 4 cups of water , turmeric ,salt and a few drops of oil upto 4 whistles.It will be soft and well cooked.

Get the Masala ready

  • Dry roast jeera , dhania ,black pepper and dry red chilli until you get the aroma .
  • Turn off the heat. In the same pan add methi seeds and leave it for a minute.
  • Transfer the methi seeds and amchur powder to the blender along with other ingredients.
  • While the pan is still hot dry roast the freshly grated coconut while the heat is turned off.
  • Allow it to cool completely .
  • Add this coconut and 2 tsp water to the blender and make a thick fine paste .
  • Keep it aside.

To make the Curry

  • Heat ghee in a wide bottom pan .
  • Add cumin and mustard seeds . Once it splutters add asafoetida , curry leaves and chopped coriander.
  • Now add the curry paste and allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Once it starts to simmer add the cooked alsande with the water .
  • Add salt as required . Let it boil for about 5 minutes and you will see the curry will start to thicken.
  • Turn off the heat. Garnish with some more freshly chopped coriander and serve with Roti ,rice, phulka or Akki rotti.
  • Enjoy…………….

Notes

  1.  Ensure you soak the black eyed peas for atleast 4 hours or overnight .
  2. Adjust the dry red chillies as per your spice tolerance . The proportion that  i have mentioned is perfect for my family.
  3. You can a mix of non spicy and spicy chilli variety.
  4. You may add potatoes or Zucchini too .
  5. It is a no onion no garlic recipe and perfect for any day.

    Alsande curry is my all time favorite. I too make this kind off a curry to pair with rotis . The buttery texture of lobia makes it so delicious and yummy when eaten with rice or even fulkas . Loved your recipe to try next

    The Alsande Curry looks super flavourful! I love that you have not used onion, garlic or tomatoes here. The freshly ground coconut and spice masala paste you have used sounds so delicious. I’d love to dig into that bowl with some hot rotis.

    Wow Preethi lobia with coconut and dry roasted spices sounds so flavorful and lipsmackingly delicious. A must try recipe. I would love to have it with hot steamed rice or paratha.
