RAW BANANA FRIED RICE

Fried rice is popular in many households. There are many varieties of fried rice . Today I am sharing a quick and delicious Raw Banana fried rice with pickled spice recipe. It is nutritious and makes a quick meal or it is ideal for lunch box too. It is finger licking good. Serve it with papad or raita as per your choice. It is be loved old and young alike. This is a no onion no garlic recipe.

Our Hostess this week is Narmadha from Nam’s Corner. She has many awesome traditional and non traditional recipes on her blog. I like her Sundal Masala Powder. Narmadha wants us to share some yummy dishes with rice apart from biryani or Pulao for 281st #VarietyRiceSpecial. My humble contribution to this wonder theme is Raw Banana Fried Rice.

Ingredients for Raw Banana Fried Rice:

  • Raw Banana : It is a power house of nutrition. Loaded with fiber and vitamins it is good for health.
  • Cooked Rice: Rice is a part of our balanced diet since ages. Anything eaten in moderation is good for health. Depends on the way we cook rice.
  • Urad Dal: I like to add uraad dal for tempering as it gives a nice crunch and taste to the dish.
  • Mustard seeds: Loaded with Calcium and manganese, omega 3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, protein and dietary fiber. It is an integral part of our cooking.
  • Cumin / Jeera: It is rich in anti-oxidants and good for minor stomach ailments .
  • Oil: I have used Sunflower Oil. You can use any oil of your choice.
  • Asafoetida: Aromatic and aids digestion.
  • Curry Leaves: I love to add fresh curry leaves as it is very good for the stomach .
  • Salt : An Important Ingredient .
  • Achari masala / Pickle Spice: This home made spice mix adds a nice taste and flavor. Blends well with the raw banana chunks.
  • Chilli Flakes: I love spicy food. These chilli flakes add a nice texture and spice to the dish.
  • Fresh Coriander: This ingredient is not to be skipped. It enhances the taste of the dish and adds a lovely flavor to the fried rice.
  • Amchur Powder:Adds a slight tang to the dish. Totally Optional.

Recipe for Raw Banana Fried Rice:

Ingredients for Raw Banana Fried Rice:

  • 2 Raw Banana peeled and cubed
  • 1 Tsp Urad Dal
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard seeds
  • 3/4 Tsp Cumin / Jeera
  • 1 Tbsp Oil
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • Few Curry Leaves
  • 1 Cup Cooked Rice
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 Tsp Achari masala / Pickle Spice
  • 1/2 Tsp Chilli Flakes
  • 2 Tbsp chopped Coriander
  • 1/4 Tsp Amchur Powder / Dry Mango powder

Method:

  • Wash,peel and cut the raw banana into cubes. Soak it in water and keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a wide bottom pan.
  • Add Urad dal ,jeera , mustard seeds . As the mustard seeds splutter add curry leaves , asafoetida and cubed raw banana.
  • Mix well. Add 1/4 cup water and allow it to cook for medium flame for about 10 mins.
  • Remove the lids. Raw banana will become soft . Ensure it is not mushy.
  • Now add pickle spice mix or achari masala , chilli flakes , Amchur powder . Let it nicely coat the banana cubes.
  • Now add cooked rice and salt as required. Mix again and let it cook on medium flame for about 5 minutes.
  • Garnish with Fresh Coriander and serve with Papad or Raita of your choice.

Notes:
  • Always apply oil to your palms and smear oil on the peeler and the knife as it does not stain them
  • You can use left over rice or freshly cooked and cooled rice.Both works well
  • Adjust the water to cook the banana cubes as required. Increase or decrease as needed.

  • Feel free to substitute fresh green chillies with chilli flakes.

  1. Preethi, that is one interesting rice dish. I would have never thought of adding plantain to fried rice. I’m a big fan of plantains so am sure would love this raw banana fried rice. Sounds flavorful.

  2. At my home no one liked raw banana but I love it so much, this raw banana fried rice looks really interesting and delicious recipe. Must try it for myself sometime!!

  3. This sounds like a pure Jain version of achaari pulao..I am loving the usage of raw banana in a rice preparation. It surely will be delicious with all the spices and flavors from the spicy achaari masala

  4. This is a very unique fried rice recipe for me.. never used raw bananas.. we do make dry subzi with it, but adding here with all the spices adds so much of flavour.. Loved it..a very filling dish that we can enjoy on our no onion garlic days.

  5. Such a unique recipe! I would never have thought of using raw banana in a rice dish. With the achaari masala, amchoor, chilli flakes coriander going in, I can make out just how flavourful it would have been!
