DAHI SABUDANA /SAGO IN YOGURT (VRAT RECIPE)

Today I am sharing a very delicious ,easy and nutritious Dahi Sabudana / Sago in Yogurt (vrat recipe) recipe. A perfect dish for offering as Bhog to God or to eat on fasting days.As per the Hindu Calendar there are many festivals in a year. There are many festivals when people fast . In some cases people do no take water or food and this is called Nirjal Upwas. There are days when you fast but can eat certain food items. There is a lot of difference in the procedure of observing fasts In North ,South ,East and Western parts of India. Some people religiously follow the rituals even today. On the days I fast i do Nirjal Upwas. You find Cultural change every 500 kms in the same state.India is so diverse with such a rich and beautiful culture.

Why do People Fast?

Our ancestors followed the rituals of Praying and Fasting. Scientifically Fasting has many benefits . Some of them are listed below:
  • Fights Inflamation
  • Promotes Blood Sugar
  • Improves Health of the heart by improving blood pressure and Cholestrol Levels
  • Aids weight loss by reducing Intake of food
  • Helps to Rejuvinate

Recipe for Dahi Sabudana / Sago in Yogurt (Vrat Recipe):

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup Sago
  • 1 Green Chilli Finely Chopped
  • 1/2 Tsp Jeera / Cumin
  • 1.5 Tbsp Roasted and Crusshed Peanuts
  • Rock salt to taste
  • 2 Tsp Finely Chopped Coriander
  • 1 Tsp Ghee
  • 1 Cup Yogurt
  • 1/4 Tsp Sugar (Optional)

Method:

  • Dry roast the sabudana till it starts to pop up. Allow it to cool. Saok it in water for about 10 minutes.
  • Drain the water
  • Whisk the curd with salt and sugar
  • Soak this drained Sabudana in curd mixture for about 2 hours
  • Sabudana would have swelled and will be fluffy and soft. Press the sabudana to ensure there is no hardness.
  • Add roasted and crushed peanuts ,chopped coriander to the yogurt mix.
  • Heat ghee in a wok.
  • Add jeera ,green chillies .
  • Pour the tempering over the Sabudana and Yogurt mixture.
  • Offer it as Bhog .

  2. Preethi, I’ve never tried roasting sabudana. Will have to try this recipe. While reading it I thought now will come the part when the cooked sabudana is added to the yogurt. Interesting recipe and healthy too.

  3. Dry Roasting Sabudana is a good way to use sabudana in dishes.i am going to try this..love raitas in hot summer afternoon sometimes for light meals.This sounds so delicious!

  4. Dahi sabudana looks healthy filling and superbly delicious Preethi. Loved this easy to make and no cook recipe except roasting sabudana and peanut. I would love to try it next Monday fast. Never used roasted sabudana. I am sure it will be taste great.

  5. Preethi, I tried out your recipe and its a really tasty one. I changed it slightly in that I cooked the soaked sabudana first with he tempering and then added to the yogurt. It was a filling dish and so much healthier than other fasting foods. Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe.
