BANANA HALWA / BALEHANNU HALWA

Today I am sharing a delicious Fruit Halwa. Banana Halwa / Balehannu Halwa is a popular sweet dish from the south. The color of the halwa varies with the variety of banana used. One of the quickest and yummiest halwa recipe. You will love it. One of the best ways to use ripened banana. It is made with simple ingredients available at home.

Ingredients for Banana Halwa / Balehannu Halwa:

  • Ripe Banana:I have used ripe Plantain here. You can use any variety here.
  • Ghee: Ghee adds a nice texture and glaze to the halwa
  • Walnuts:Walnuts and banana are match made in heaven. I love the ghee roasted walnuts.
  • Cashews: My boys love cashews and hence I have added some. You may add any dry fruit of your choice.
  • Sugar: The ripe Plantains were sweet hence I have added very little sugar. you can substitute jaggery instead. I would suggest you to add a mix of jaggery and sugar as sugar gives a nice glaze to the halwa.
  • Desiccated Coconut: I have garnished with desiccated coconut and this completely optional.
  • Milk: Enhances the taste of the halwa. This is completely optional.

  • Wide bottom Pan
  • Spatula
  • Blender

Ingredients for Banana Halwa / Balehannu Halwa:

  • 2 Ripe Plantains
  • 1 Tbsp Ghee
  • 4 Walnuts chopped
  • 6 Cashews
  • 2 Tsp Sugar
  • Desiccated Coconut for Garnish
  • 1 Tbsp Milk

Method:

  • Blend the Ripe plantain to get a lump free mixture.
  • Heat ghee in a wide bottom pan.
  • Roast the walnuts and Cashews until they turn slightly brown.
  • Transfer them to a plate.
  • Add the blended mixture and keep stirring until you get the aroma.
  • Now add milk and sugar and mix well untill the mixtures starts to form a lump about 8-10 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat.
  • Garnish with desiccated coconut and roasted cashews and walnuts.
  • Serve hot or chilled as per your choice.

Notes:

  • Use fully ripe plantains or banana.
  • Adjust the sweetness depending on the sweetness of the banana and your choice .
  • You can keep it longer for the halwa to turn dark.
  • You may add jaggery instead of Sugar. But add little sugar for a nice glaze.
  • Add dry fruits of your choice.
  • Adding milk is completely optional.

  1. Baale hannu halwa super aagidhe !! I vaguely remember having tasted this halwa,but your recipe now will not make me run around the family to finish the ripe bananas 🙂 . The ripe bananas will soon turn halwa in my kitchen

  3. Preethi this banana halwa reminds me of the plantain sweet that my maid had cooked for us. It is so similar to the Swahili Plantain sweet she made except that she used coconut milk and cardamom. Different and yummy. Must try out your version.
